Roberts wins state championship

GLHS junior Derek Roberts won the Class A state championship in the pole vault at the Georgia Olympics in Jefferson on Thursday, May 7. Roberts had placed fifth in the event as a freshman and third as a sophomore.

Also placing at the state meet was senior Josh Guthrie who finished third in the high jump and eighth in the long jump.

2009 season updates

May 16 The 4x400m relay team of Jessica Mummert, Kelsie Bickett, Sam Taylor, and Anna Quinn finished sixth at the state meet but broke their own school record in the event with a time of 4:21.07. The Lady Trojans placed 11th as a team in the Class A meet.

May 15 Anna Quinn finished second and Mallory Crowder placed third in the pole vault at the state meet in Albany. Jessica Powell was eighth in the high jump.

May 7 Derek Roberts cleared 13-0 in the pole vault to win the Class A state championship at the state meet in Jefferson. Josh Guthrie finished third in the high jump and tied the GLHS record with a jump of 6-8. Guthrie also placed eighth in the long jump.

May 5 The Lady Trojans finished second in the Region 6-A meet and qualified nine athletes for the state meet. Winning region titles for GLHS were Anna Quinn in the pole vault, Jessica Powell in the high jump, and Kendall Johnson in the triple jump with a school-record distance of 33-0 1/4. Gordon Lee got second-place finishes from Mallory Crowder in the pole vault, Jordan Bohannon in the shot put, Jessica Mummert in the 400m, Camilla Loggins in the 800m, and Johnson in the 100m hurdles and 300m hurdles. The 4x400m relay team of Mummert, Kelsie Bickett, Sam Taylor, and Quinn also finished second but set a new GLHS record with a time of 4:22.48.

Apr 28 Gordon Lee finished third at the boys' Region 6-A meet. Josh Guthrie won the high jump and long jump, Derek Roberts won the pole vault, and Joseph Kennedy placed second in the discus. All three qualified for the state meet in Jefferson.

Apr 23 The Trojans got individual wins from Derek Roberts and Josh Guthrie while the Lady Trojans saw Kelsie Bickett, Jordan Bohannon, Kendall Johnson, Anna Quinn, and Camilla Loggins come up with first-place finishes. Loggins set a new GLHS record in the 3200m with a time of 13:59.

Apr 18 Gordon Lee had two individual winners at the Darlington Relays. Anna Quinn captured the girls' pole vault while Derek Roberts took first in the boys' pole vault. Sam Taylor set a new GLHS record in the 1600m with a time of 6:00.

Apr 16 The Lady Trojans won the 55th Gordon Lee Invitational by 26 points even though they finished first in only one event. Mallory Crowder won the pole vault by clearing 9-6 to tie the Invitational meet record. Crowder received the Girls' Best in Field award. The Trojans finished fifth in the nine-team field, getting wins from Derek Roberts in the pole vault and Josh Guthrie in the high jump and long jump. Guthrie also placed fourth in the triple jump and was named as Boys' Best in Field.

Mar 19 The girls' team defeated Dade County, LaFayette, and Ridgeland. Camilla Loggins, Kelsie Bickett, Kaita McGregor, Sam Taylor, Kendall Johnson, Courtney Towns, Amber Early, and Anna Quinn picked up first-place points. The boys' team outscored Dade County. Aaron Mize, Joseph Kennedy, Ryan Culbreth, and Derek Roberts won events for GLHS.

Mar 17 The Lady Trojans beat LFO and Dade County in their season-opening meet. Mallory Crowder, Camilla Loggins, Kelsie Bickett, Kendall Johnson, Sam Taylor, Jessica Mummert, Anna Quinn, and Kelly Mariakis finished first in their events. Early set a new GLHS record in the 200m with a time of 27.37 and Johnson's leap of 32-2 1/2 in the triple jump shattered the old school record by 23 1/2 inches. The Trojans topped Dade County, getting first-place finishes from Josh Guthrie, Derek Roberts, Russell Wright, Ryan Culbreth, and Brennan Boyd.
