Softball team wins State Championship
The Gordon Lee softball team won the 2004 Class A state championship with a 3-0 blanking of defending state champion Brookstone on Saturday, October 30. The Lady Trojans went undefeated in the Final Eight, knocking off Brookstone, Bowdon, and Pacelli in early-round games.
Gordon Lee, who finished the season with a 25-10 record, did not allow a run in the final three games of the tournament.
The state championship was the first for the Lady Trojans since they began playing fastpitch in 1998. Gordon Lee finished fourth in 2002 and third in 2003.
Reed, six Lady Trojans receive state honors
The Georgia Sportswriter's Association has named six members of the GLHS softball team to its All-State teams. Senior Sam Floyd, junior Morgan Anderson, and sophomore Maddie McKinley were selected to the first team, sophomore Abbie Kennedy was chosen for the second team, and junior Krista Goodlet and sophomore Jenna Mitchell were named as Honorable Mention.
Coach Dana Reed, who has led the Lady Trojans to two straight region championships and to a state title in 2004, was chosen as the Class A Coach of the Year.
Floyd, named Class A Pitcher of the Year, has been a first-team selection each of the last two seasons. McKinley was a second-team selection last year while Goodlet repeats as an Honorable Mention choice.
Softball team wins Region title
The GLHS softball team won its second consecutive Region 6A championship October 14 with a 3-0 win over Bremen. The Lady Trojans, currently ranked second in the state, had defeated Trion in the tournament's first round and Bremen in the winner's bracket finals.
2004 season updates
October 30 — Gordon Lee won its first state fastpitch championship, shutting out Brookstone 3-0. Sam Floyd allowed only two hits in the win. Morgan Anderson had an RBI double for the Lady Trojans.
October 29 — The Lady Trojans advanced to the state championship game, beating Pacelli 3-0. Sam Floyd pitched a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts.
October 28 — Gordon Lee defeated defending state champion Brookstone 6-3 in the first round of the state Finals tournament then knocked off Bowdon 2-0 in the second round.
October 23 — The Lady Trojans lost to Bowdon 1-0 but qualified for the state Finals tournament by beating Social Circle 16-0.
October 22 — Gordon Lee won two games in the state Sectional tournament, defeating Social Circle 6-0 and Mount Zion 14-0.
October 14 — The Lady Trojans captured the Region 6A championship with a 3-0 win over Bremen. Sam Floyd pitched a two-hitter with eight strikeouts. Maddie McKinley led off the bottom of the first with a home run and added an RBI single in the fifth to lead the Gordon Lee offense.
October 13 — Gordon Lee defeated Bremen 3-2 in the winner's bracket finals of the Region 6A tournament. Sam Floyd was the winning pitcher and had a home run, a double, and two RBIs at the plate.
October 11 — Sam Floyd drove in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning as Gordon Lee defeated Trion 1-0 in the first round of the Region 6A tournament. Floyd was the winning pitcher, allowing only two hits in eight innings. Maddie McKinley had two hits for the Lady Trojans.
October 5 — Gordon Lee avenged its only region loss of the season, pounding Trion 10-2. Maddie McKinley, Abbie Kennedy, Sue Ellen Raulston, and Lauren Rice had two hits each. The Lady Trojans finished first in Region 6A with a 5-1 record.
October 2 — The Lady Trojans defeated Perry 3-0 and Northside-Columbus 3-2 before falling to Fayette County 2-1 in the finals of the Silver Division of the Milton Invitational Tournament.
October 1 — Gordon Lee won two games in the Milton Tournament, defeating Murray County 4-1 and Shaw 5-4.
September 28 — The Lady Trojans notched their third consecutive shutout, beating Bremen 1-0. Sam Floyd was the winning pitcher, allowing three hits and striking out five. Kelli Hudson drove in the game's only run with a fifth-inning single.
September 27 — The Lady Trojans shut out Armuchee 5-0. Kelli Hudson allowed only two hits and struck out ten. Krista Goodlet was 4 for 4 with two RBIs. Sam Floyd and Maddie McKinley had two hits each.
September 25 — Gordon Lee defeated Bowdon 4-0. Sam Floyd pitched a one-hit shutout with nine strikeouts. Jenna Mitchell was 3 for 3 with two RBIs.
September 21 — The Lady Trojans allowed four unearned runs for the second consecutive game and fell to Trion 5-4.
September 20 — Gordon Lee gave up four unearned runs and lost to Dade County 4-1.
September 15 — The Lady Trojans knocked off top-ranked Bremen 3-2 in nine innings. Sue Ellen Raulston, Sam Floyd, and Maddie McKinley drove in runs as Gordon Lee pounded out 12 hits for the game. Krista Goodlet, Lauren Rice, Jenna Mitchell, and Morgan Anderson had two hits each. Floyd limited Bremen to only five hits in nine innings while striking out 10.
September 14 — Gordon Lee defeated Rockmart 2-0. Abbie Kennedy drove in two first-inning runs for the Lady Trojans and Sam Floyd made them stand up, firing a two-hitter with eight strikeouts.
September 11 — The Lady Trojans won their first region game of the year, shutting out fifth-ranked Bowdon 1-0. Sam Floyd pitched a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts for the victory.
August 31 — The Lady Trojans lost to Kell 2-1 in 8 innings. Sam Floyd allowed only three hits and drove in the Gordon Lee run.
August 24 — Gordon Lee defeated Walker 11-1. Kelli Hudson and Callie Gee combined on a five-inning no-hitter for the Lady Trojans. Maddie McKinley was 3 for 4 with two home runs and a double, Sam Floyd was 3 for 3 with two doubles, and Morgan Anderson and Krista Goodlet both recorded two hits.
August 23 — The Lady Trojans lost to LFO 2-0. Abbie Kennedy had the only hit for Gordon Lee.
August 21 — Gordon Lee opened play in the LFO tournament with a 4-1 win over Dade County. Jenna Mitchell had a double and two RBIs. The Lady Trojans followed up with a 1-0 win over Dalton before falling to Columbus 4-3 in 10 innings.
August 14 — The Lady Trojans lost to Ridgeland and Northwest in the Northwest Whitfield Tournament. Sam Floyd and Abbie Kennedy had doubles against Ridgeland and Maddie McKinley had a double against Northwest.
August 13 — Gordon Lee defeated Dalton and lost to Murray County in the Northwest Whitfield Back to School Tournament. Against Dalton Krista Goodlet had two hits, including a double, and Maddie McKinley had two hits, including a triple. Kelli Hudson was the winning pitcher, allowing only three hits. Against Murray, Abbie Kennedy was two for two with a double.
