Human selected to All-State Band
GLHS senior Chris Human has been selected to the 2010 Georgia All-State Band. Human earned the first chair contrabass clarinet seat, the third time he has been first chair All-State.
Human is the just the third student in GLHS history to be chosen for the All-State band in three different years, and is the only one to have earned first chair three times.
GLHS recognized for student achievement
Gordon Lee High School has earned a bronze award for outstanding student achievement in the 2009 Single Statewide Accountability System awards, announced by the Governor's Office of Student Achievement on December 15. Schools must meet three criteria to be determined winners:
- Remain above needs improvement status;
- Demonstrate that at least 20% of students exceed standards in all test areas as measured by state assessments; and
- Demonstrate that at least 95% of students meet or exceed standards as measured by state assessments.
GLHS is one of only 26 high schools in the state of Georgia to receive this award for the 2008-2009 school year.
Science Fair winners announced
The 2009 Fall Semester Science Fair was held December 2–3 in the Ware-Jewell Activities Building. Clare Thomas, Heather Vallellanes, Briley Goss, Reagan Chastain, and Kendall McWilliams were awarded the fair's Sweepstakes ribbons.
Thomas received the first-place award for her project testing if the juglone chemical found in the hulls and leaves of black walnut trees inhibited the growth of adjacent plants. She found that certain plants were not affected by the black walnut leaves and hulls while others were.
Vallellanes and Goss collaborated on a project that tested whether animals have a dominant brain hemisphere. They found that almost half of the animals tested were "left-pawed." Their project received the second-place ribbon.
Chastain and McWilliams were awarded the third-place ribbon. They conducted a test to determine which popular beverage causes the most tooth decay. They concluded that Powerade caused the most and quickest decay among the drinks tested.
