Chickamauga City Schools

Dress Code

Rationale

The Chickamauga City Schools Board of Education supports a learning environment which is safe, conducive to learning and free of distractions. A student's dress and personal appearance should reflect pride in self and school.

It is our hope that students will leave Chickamauga City Schools with an understanding that "appropriate dress" is determined by the event or function a person is attending.

A dress code has been established for Chickamauga City Schools to help set the proper atmosphere for learning to take place. Students are required to show proper attention to personal cleanliness, neatness, and conservative standards of dress and appearance. Your cooperation in providing a positive climate for learning is appreciated.

Guidelines for Dress

  1. Any appearance which is disruptive to the educational process is prohibited.
  2. Clothes will be in good taste, size appropriate, and will not be revealing in cut, fit or consistency of material. Jeans will not have holes in them and will not be frayed. Hip huggers and oversized clothing will not be permitted.
  3. All students must wear shoes. Boys must wear socks.
  4. Students should wear shorts only in P.E. class (exception grades K-5). Culottes or split skirts must be knee length. Anything that looks like shorts is not allowed.
  5. Girls' skirts must be of modest length. Tights that are knit and form fitting should have skirt-length apparel over them. Skirts with splits that expose the thigh are prohibited.
  6. Sweat suits are not allowed in middle and high school, but are allowed in elementary. No breakaway pants.
  7. Boys must wear long pants (exception grades K-5).
  8. No bare midriffs. Shirts, blouses or tops which reveal a bare midriff when sitting, bending or raising arms are prohibited.
  9. Males' shirts must be tucked in and no student's shirt is to be bloused out to give the appearance of being tucked in.
  10. Students who wear trousers or slacks that have belt loops must wear a belt and the belt must be visible.
  11. No see-through shirts without appropriate attire underneath.
  12. Appropriate undergarments are required.
  13. No strapless or tank tops allowed.
  14. Males' shirts must have sleeves — no muscle shirts.
  15. Tee shirts designed as an undergarment must be tucked in. Jerseys may be worn over acceptable attire but must be tucked in. Girls may wear blouses that are square cut that reach no lower than the top of hip pockets without tucking them in. Shirts with a ribbed waistband may be worn out.
  16. No clothing with the American flag improperly displayed.
  17. No clothing with profanity, lewd pictures, symbols that are controversial and may be offensive to others, suggestive slogans or advertisements or logos of items illegal for younger students to purchase (alcohol, tobacco, drugs, etc.). No skulls, cross bones, knives, etc. associated with death or dismemberment. No shirts promoting entertainers or groups promoting any of the above.
  18. No clothing with holes in it.
  19. No wearing of hats or caps inside buildings, no chains, flip flops, or military utility clothing.
  20. Sunglasses (except prescription sunglasses) may not be worn inside school buildings.
  21. No body piercings.
